Laetitia Gerards and Raoul Steffani to perform Phion’s New Year’s Concert at the Concertgebouw

Soprano Laetitia Gerards and baritone Raoul Steffani will be the soloists of the New Year’s concert of the AVROTROS Sunday morning series at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. With the orchestra Phion led by Enrico Delamboye, they perform arias and duets from operas and operettas. (full programme here below)

The concert is one of the very few live musical events happening in the Netherlands at the moment, because of the strict lockdown. Radio 4 AVROTROS is recording and broadcasting the concert live on January 2nd at 11:00.

Laetitia Gerards previously worked with the orchestra Phion in 2019, when she sang the role of Anne in Sondheim’s A little night music with the Dutch Reisopera, and in the summer of 2021 as a soloist in an all-American programme led by Sander Teepen. This spring, she will sing Marenka in The Bartered Bride, again with the Dutch Reisopera with Phion in the pit.

For Raoul Steffani, this is his second collaboration in a month with Phion: in December he performed Alma Mahler’s Fünf Lieder in an arrangement for orchestra with them, conducted by Otto Tausk, to critical acclaim of De Volkskrant: “Raoul Steffani, with his warm, levelled baritone voice and sensitivity to text, is a dreamed-of song interpreter.”

The broadcast of the New Year’s Concert is available for playback on the website of Radio 4.
