Belgian countertenor Logan Lopez Gonzalez is a versatile artist, equally at home in baroque, contemporary, and operatic repertoire. He is known for his communicative energy and a timbre that is both sensitive and luminous. His performances have been praised for their depth and intensity, with Opera Magazine stating, "As for Logan Lopez Gonzalez, no praise is high enough. (…) claiming this repertoire for the countertenor voice."

A sought-after interpreter of baroque music, Logan collaborates regularly with ensembles such as Cappella Mediterranea, Concerto Soave, Il Groviglio, Le Concert Bourgeois, and the Orchestre Royal de l’Opéra de Versailles. At the same time, he is deeply engaged in contemporary music, having created roles in several world premieres, including Be My Superstar at LOD Muziektheater, Opera Vlaanderen, and Dutch National Opera, the title role in SOLAR, Icarus Burning at La Monnaie, the Wolf in Vasco Mendonça’s The Girl, the Hunter and the Wolf, and OGRES by Simon Voseček at the Prague National Theatre.

During the 2024/25 season, Logan takes on the role of Argone in Händel’s Sosarme at the Opéra Royal de Versailles and Speranza in Monteverdi’s Orfeo at the Opéra de Marseille. He also appears as a soloist in staged performances of Amour à mort at the Opéra National de Lorraine and Bach’s St John Passion at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. In concert, he performs Bach and Händel cantatas with Cappella Mediterranea and Leonardo García Alarcón at the Festival d’Ambronay, as well as a programme of Roman polyphony at the Chapelle Royale de Versailles, among others.

Logan also brings 555: Verlaine en prison to London for four performances at the Arcola Theatre. A production he co-created with director Eleanor Burke, the work is a queer exploration of the life of French poet Paul Verlaine. After its 2023 premiere at La Monnaie, they brought the production to the Royal Opera House in 2024. Following its London run at Grimeborn Opera Festival and the Arcola Theatre, Logan was nominated for Best Performance at the Off West End Theatre Awards (UK).

Highlights of the 2023/24 season included his debut at the Salzburger Osterfestspiele and the Opéra de Dijon in Bach’s St. John’s Passion in the acclaimed new production by Sasha Waltz and Leonardo García Alarcón, his debut at the National Theatre of Prague in the world premiere of Šimon Voseček opera OGRES, the role of Gloria in Vivaldi’s Gloria e Imeneo at the Théâtre de la Reine in Versailles, a concert tour to five Chinese cities with the Orchestra of the Opéra Royal de Versailles, Händel’s Messiah at the Namur Concert Hall, the creation of Amour à mort at La cité bleue in Geneva, and song recitals in Belgium and France with his pianist Stella Marie Lorenz.

Logan trained at the Conservatoire Royal de Mons and the Royal Academy of Music, before joining the National Opera Studio of the United Kingdom, La Monnaie/De Munt Academy, and the Britten Pears Young Artist Programme. He made his professional debut aged 21, performing Frantík and the Grasshopper in The Cunning Little Vixen at La Monnaie and Amore in L’Incoronazione di Poppea during the same season at Angers Nantes Opéra in a production by Moshe Leiser & Patrice Caurier.

His recording of Argante in Händel’s Rinaldo has just been released by Glossa Music. In future seasons, he looks forward to debuting in the title role of Händel’s Ottone in Switzerland and to bringing his production of 555: Verlaine en prison to new stages.

Aria’s from Händel’s Rinaldo | Ensemble Il Groviglio | Eglise de Saint-Louis-en-l’île, Paris | January 2025

As Rinaldo and Argante, the superb countertenor Logan Lopez Gonzalez delights us with his beautiful vocal line, subtly punctuated by magnificent nuances. He handles agility with virtuosity, always with a refined sense of taste and a clear vocal delivery. He is one of the finest countertenor voices of his generation—definitely one to watch!

555: Verlaine en prison | Arcola Theatre, London | September 2024

As for Lopez Gonzalez, no praise is high enough. (…) Claiming this repertoire for the countertenor voice, he infused his performance with infinitely more facets than the lyrics (sung or spoken), holding the audience in thrall for an hour where his physical acting was as intense as his singing. An award-worthy achievement.

We have some glorious singing from countertenor Logan Lopez Gonzalez. He entrances with his long, beautifully sustained high notes at the end of the sensuous phrases. This is just gorgeous.

Cantatas by Bach and Händel | Cappella Mediterranea & Leonardo García-Alarcón | Festival d’Ambronay | September 2024

Logan Lopez Gonzalez continues to impress, just as he did at La Cité Bleue in May: his voice remains vibrant and shimmering, with deeply rooted and powerful low notes.

Recital INSANITY | Festival Volcadiva | July 2024

Effortlessly transitioning between different repertoires and eras, the countertenor showcases the valor and brilliance of his unique instrument for an hour, particularly resonant with a line that stretches out with a beautifully sustained breath. A voice that thrives in the more virtuosic works of Handel and Schumann, yet can also navigate darker, more ethereal waters in more contemporary repertoire. In Maurice Schoemaker’s monastic Psalm, the young artist shifts between the low and head voice with the agility of a seasoned acrobat, alternating between mezza voce and high notes of striking resonance.
But beyond the sound, there are also words, and while there are rare moments where the imposing sonic texture slightly veils the letter (while still captivating the audience), everything is implemented here to give full weight to the texts and the emotions they carry. All this in German, English, Italian, and French, equally well-crafted and remarkable. [...] The singer, with an undeniable vocal personality and communicative energy, finds a perfect partner in German pianist Stella Marie Lorenz. A virtuoso, always attuned to her partner with numerous exchanged glances, the instrumentalist also demonstrates unparalleled technique.

Solar: Icarus burning | La Monnaie | March 2023

Logan Lopez Gonzalez displays the sensitivity and great clarity of his countertenor voice, portraying Icarus as a tragic figure full of hope and radiant in his own way. His power sometimes even overpowers the orchestra. Yet, he never seeks power, always opting for an intimate phrasing, serving the prosodic and musical precision of this score.
